School Case Study
St Christopher’s School, Leigh on Sea
This complex scheme involved adding another floor to the main single-storey building, providing nine new classrooms and four sets of toilet facilities catering for able bodied and disabled pupils. We also carried out alterations and refurbishment to the ground floor.
A W Hardy approach every school project with care and consideration, but in this case extra sensitivity was required as St Christopher’s serves children from the ages of three through to nineteen, with severe learning and communication difficulties, including autism and ADHD. As the bulk of the work took place during the course of the school year, we needed to maintain a high level of project management and close liaison with all involved, to ensure the safety and success of the job.
Construction of the new storey required internal piles, ground beams and the erection of a steel frame. This took place within the 5 ½ week summer holiday window and included partially dismantling the interior of the existing building, before restoring it to its original state in time for the children to return!
During this phase we uncovered a disused service duct, but managed to stay within the challenging programme, despite needing to break out additional concrete and shutter ground beams.
Budget: £1.7 million
