Lee Chapel Junior School – Entrance Extension, Conversion of the Knares Building and New Assembly Hall
This project was made up of a serious of interdependent phases requiring linking the existing school to adjacent single storey offices, internal refurbishment and re-configuration of former office buildings and the provision of a new attached assembly hall.
Phase One involved works to the existing School Entrance to completely change its location over a school summer holiday period with the deadline for completion prior to the children coming back for the Autumn term.
The contract commenced with a new entrance between the existing school and an adjoining building previously occupied as council offices (The Knares Building). Upon completion, Phase Two was able to begin involving the conversion of the Knares Building to create six additional classrooms, a staff room, two sets of toilets and changing rooms.
The third phase was the erection of a new Assembly Hall which was built off piled foundations and ground beams with a beam and block floor. The steel frame with cavity brick /blockwork panelled walls was then constructed and Kingspan flat roof added before final finishing and fitting out of the new space.
A.W. Hardy maintained constant liaison with both the design team and the school site team on how the site was to be trafficked so that the works could be confined and cause a minimum of disruption to the school’s day to day running.
