The lasting impact of our work at Barling Magna Primary Academy

Several years ago, we were awarded the contract for vital building works at Barling Magna Primary Academy in Southend-on-Sea, which is part of Brickfields Multi Academy Trust.

The single storey extension was an essential provision for the school, which was working towards providing full form entry so it could take on more pupils from the local area. Brexit panic and Covid lockdowns delayed things somewhat, but we were eventually able to begin the construction phase in May 2022.

More than a year after the project was completed in January 2023, we spoke to Barling Magna Primary Academy’s Head of School, Sue Clarke, for her reflections on what the build has meant for the school and the wider community, and her experience of partnering with A.W. Hardy.

Sue explained:

“Since the building’s completion, every space in the extension has been fully utilised; the children love their new classroom and the staff, at last, have a spacious place to destress during break times. The DT/Science room has been used for art, cookery, science and music lessons and also for meetings with staff and parents, as it has access to an additional IWB.”

“Most importantly, the additional three SEND rooms have provided much needed space for one to one and small group sessions. One room in particular is being used as a sensory room. This has proved invaluable by giving pupils a space in which to regulate themselves when they become overwhelmed then bring their emotions and sensory levels to a more manageable level from which they can re-enter their classroom and access their learning.

She continued:

“Despite the build being delayed due to Brexit and Covid, A.W. Hardy were extremely efficient and supportive throughout the whole process. They kept the school fully informed and forewarned of each step in the process. Their staff were approachable and helpful, always finding solutions to potential problems. I would definitely work with them again.

“Overall, the process was a positive experience due to the support of A.W. Hardy and the building has been a valuable addition to our school.”
