Commercial Case Study
Maldon Salt Company, Maldon, Essex
Harvesting salt from the sea is an ancient craft in Essex, but nowadays only one single company carries on this trade – The Maldon Salt Company.
Maldon Salt is still harvested by hand in the traditional manner so there will always be a limit to the amount that can be produced. In a move to address this Maldon Salt Company appointed A.W Hardy & Co. Ltd to construct a second processing plant at their premises on the Blackwater Estuary in Essex.
Operating out of traditional black Essex weather-board buildings, the new processing plant blends seamlessly with the traditional appearance of the existing premises. A timber glulam frame forms the main structure with brickwork & blockwork cavity wall infills receiving the weather-board finish. The tiled roof will receive an internal tile support system lining, finished to combat the aggressively corrosive atmosphere that is generated during the salt-extraction process.
Alterations and additions to the yard area also formed part of this new build scheme, which is part of the Osborne family’s vision to continue operating for the next 100 years and beyond.
