Background

We were delighted to be chosen by Southend Borough Council as the contractor to refurbish and redevelop the Carriage & Wagon Shed, Old Shoebury Garrison. The project, which was designed by Cazenove Architects, was completed in early 2021 and provides new heritage facilities and host arts projects. The building also offers a café and meeting venue that can be enjoyed by the whole community. The project attracted great interest from local community and heritage groups.

Community involvement

We were proud to ensure that effective consultation took place with stakeholders and that works were carried out smoothly and safely.

The new building now boasts an archive facility, open space for displays, a café and a kitchen with catering-grade facilities. It is also home to office and storage space, new toilets and a meeting room with a dividing/moveable wall. We also undertook extensive work at the rear of the building to provide a seating area and both soft and hard landscaped finishes.

As a long-term trusted partner of Southend Borough Council, we were delighted to be involved in a prestigious heritage project that has produced wonderful facilities for local residents and visitors.

Converting an old and cherished garrison to a vibrant heritage centre, designed to serve the whole community
